When most ski resorts are closed and hoping for an early winter, Dubai boasts large crowds of snow worshippers.
At a time when visitors are beating the summer heat with trips to the beach, the Middle East has provided the ultimate cool-down location. Situated on the extreme eastern edge of the Arabian Gulf the city of Dubai has found another successful business opportunity. With the second anniversary of Ski Dubai approaching, the wonder of skiing in 45 degree heat (112 degrees F) has spread to all corners of the world. Tourists have appreciated another unbelievable activity in the Golden Desert.
The official “opening” anniversary will be later this year; however, the completion opening is celebrated in September. During these two years Ski Dubai has turned into more than a local ski run, but a destination for tourist from all corners of the globe. With ski treks, snowboarding and toboggan runs, it rivals any small resort throughout the world. Equipped with an on slope restaurant and a ski school people have found Ski Dubai an adventure by itself. Ski instructors from around the world have found employment in the most unlikely place as told by Steve Bergsman in Retail Traffic: “The young French woman was…now…leading [ski] classes here in Dubai.” And tourist from everywhere, who had no idea of the resort, find it a must see once they hear about Ski Dubai.
Two years have nearly gone by and the resort has seen a great deal of success. Competition will come in 2008 with the completion of a larger Dubai Sunny Mountain Ski Dome located in Dubailand; however, now Ski Dubai has a firm hold on the region. Ski Dubai can hold 1,500 skiers, snowboarders and other guests; numbers reached only occasionally. There is no shortage of tourists available. According to the Dubai Department of Tourism, 10 million tourists will visit Dubai in 2007 and a very large portion will spend some time at Ski Dubai. Located in the Mall of the Emirates, the 2nd largest mall in the world outside of China (based upon total area) the occasional visitor will find themselves skiing when their intention was to shop.
Ski Dubai has benefited from an all inclusive package concept, where the skier need bring nothing with him or her in order to enjoy the snow. From skis and boots to socks and clothing; the unintended skier has nothing to fret when considering his activities. Even small children are completely outfitted and required to wear the included helmets when enjoying the snow park, caverns or inner tube rides.
This anniversary of Ski Dubai falls just prior to the Holy month of Ramadan and hours are adjusted, but the tourist does not need to fear. All five runs will be opened, the restaurants (on slope and in the mall) as well as activities for children and non skiers. Anniversary celebrations have yet to be announced and it is possible that celebrations will be held later in the year on the anniversary of the public opening. All one has to do is navigate Dubai traffic and enjoy a cool day away from the heat.
